DHAKA — In a significant move toward modernizing Bangladesh’s energy landscape, Mr. Ulrich Kleppmann, Counsellor and Head of German Development Cooperation at the German Embassy, conducted a high-level visit to the Grid Studies and Innovation Facility (GSIF) and the National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC) at Power Grid Bangladesh PLC today.

The visit highlighted the critical role of technical innovation in managing a stable and resilient power grid as the nation scales up its renewable energy ambitions. The GSIF, established with support from the German-funded Energy Efficiency and Grid Integration of Renewable Energy (EEGIRE) II project (implemented by GIZ), has become a vital hub for advanced power system analytics.

Solving the Stability Puzzle

As Bangladesh integrates more solar and wind energy into its national network, grid planners face the technical challenge of managing “variable” power sources. The GSIF provides the specialized tools necessary to maintain grid stability, specifically addressing:

  • Frequency Instability: Balancing the rapid fluctuations inherent in renewable energy.

  • Voltage Fluctuations: Ensuring a steady flow of electricity to prevent equipment damage and blackouts.

Two Landmark Studies Underway

With additional support from the European Union, two transformative studies are currently being conducted in partnership with Power Grid Bangladesh:

  1. VRE Grid Readiness (2030–2040): A strategic assessment of the national grid’s capacity to integrate significantly higher shares of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) over the next two decades.

  2. Greening the RMG Sector: A dedicated exploration of technical and regulatory pathways to transition the Readymade Garment (RMG) industry. This study aims to shift the sector away from fossil-fuel-based captive power toward clean, reliable, and sustainable grid electricity—a move essential for the global competitiveness of “Made in Bangladesh” products.

A Commitment to a Green Future

By bridging deep technical expertise with actionable policy recommendations, German Development Cooperation remains a steadfast partner in Bangladesh’s journey toward a green energy future. This collaboration ensures that the transition is not only sustainable but also provides a stable and reliable power supply for the millions of people and industries driving the nation’s economy.
