Ecosystem services

Ecosystem services are the direct and indirect benefits that humans receive from natural ecosystems. These benefits support human life and well-being in various essential ways, such as providing clean water, fertile soil through decomposition and nutrient cycling, air purification, climate regulation, and flood control. Ecosystem services are generally categorized into four types: provisioning (such as food, fresh water, timber, and medicines), regulating (such as climate regulation, water purification, pollination, and disease control), supporting (which maintain fundamental ecosystem processes like nutrient cycling and habitat for biodiversity), and cultural services (including recreation, tourism, education, and spiritual enrichment). These services are vital for sustaining human livelihoods, economic activities, and health, and their preservation is critical for sustainable development and environmental management. Understanding and valuing ecosystem services help guide conservation efforts and policy decisions that protect natural resources and maintain ecosystem functions.
